GITVC presents: Sickle Cell Awareness Month: Understanding the Positive Impact of Clinical Trials, Blood Donations and Genetic Counseling. This event will be held, virtually, on September 28, 2021 from 7 PM - 8 PM.

Join us to learn about the importance of understanding the sickle cell disease and the positive impact genetic counselors can have on education, support and more. We will also discuss how participants are protected in research studies that contribute to the growing knowledge of sickle cell disease. Guest Speakers are James Taylor VI, MD; Director of the Center for Sickle Cell Disease at Howard University, and Barbara Harrison, MS; Certified Genetic Counselor at Howard University. The event will be moderated by Finie Richardson, Ph.D., MPH.

Dr. Kristen Miller serves as Scientific Director of the MedStar Health National Center for Human Factors in Healthcare, Associate Professor at Georgetown and Adjunct in Biomedical Engineering at Catholic University. Dr. Miller is a clinically oriented human factors researcher, whose NIH, AHRQ, NSF, ONCHIT, and FDA supported research focuses on medical decision making, informatics, and the assessment of medical interventions. She will share her team’s systems engineering approach, in their active AHRQ-funded project, to improve the accurate, timely, and effectively-communicated diagnosis of CVD in women in order to develop innovative solutions to address the persisting healthcare inequity due to sex and gender differences in CVD diagnosis in ambulatory care.
