Georgetown Awarded $23.6M PCORI Grant to Study Treatments for Acute Rhinosinusitis

The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) has awarded Principal Investigator, Dan Merenstein, MD, Professor of Family Medicine at Georgetown’s School of Medicine and Professor of Human Science at the School of Health and Co-Principal Investigator, Nawar M. Shara, PhD, Director of Center of Biostatistics, Informatics and Data Science (CBIDS) at the MedStar Health Research Institute, a $23.6 million research grant to study treatments for acute rhinosinusitis.   Acute rhinosinusitis involves inflammation of the nose and sinus passages, most often caused by a viral or bacterial infection. Together, the investigators will recruit more than 3,700 people diagnosed with acute rhinosinusitis to the largest clinical trial of its kind to study various treatment approaches.  Dr. Merenstein served as part of the GHUCCTS Community Engagement Core for various years and took from this experience to inform the engagement sections of the grant.  Dr. Shara is a long-standing member of the GHUCCTS team serving as Director of BERD and Co-Director of Biomedical Informatics and she provided key input during grant development.  The GHUCCTS Community Engagement Core will take an active role during study implementation by developing and facilitating the study’s Patient Advisory Board.
